Large multinationals plan investment expansion in Vietnam

Within the framework of WEF Davos 2024, Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on January 16 presided over a panel discussion with global technology firms on cooperation to develop AI, automotive technology and semiconductor industry.

Representatives of the world’s leading corporations were present at the event, including Google, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, H&M Hennes & Mauritz, Siemens, Mahindra, PSA International, JANZZ.technology, and Qualcomm.

They praised Vietnam’s achievements and vision in developing green and sustainable development. The corporations committed to expand investment and business in Vietnam, hoping that the government will continue to create favorable conditions to invest in technology, innovations, semiconductors, AI and strategic infrastructure.

Vietnam has jumped seven grades in the AI Readiness Index to the 55th position out of 181 countries. There are 50 education establishments in Vietnam that provide AI-based  majors.

To develop the automobile industry, Vietnam has issued the national strategy on green growth in 2021-2030, with a vision toward 2050, which says that Vietnam will set up a roadmap on shifting to electric vehicles, encouraging means of transport using green energy.

Vietnam has shown its determination to develop a semiconductor industry and build an ecosystem for the industry. The country will soon release a strategy on developing the semiconductor industry and a plan on producing 50,000 engineers in the field.

Vietnam has successfully attracted semiconductor multinationals. Intel, Samsung, Amkor, Qualcomm, Infineon, Marvell, and Hana Micron are present and are expanding their investments in Vietnam.

The US Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA), the Asian Semiconductor Association and a number of large corporations and partners all highly praise Vietnam’s potential in the field.

Speaking at the event, Chinh said Vietnam is an important link in the global and regional supply chain. It is also one of the 20 economies with the largest trade scale with 16 free trade agreements (FTAs) signed and 3 others under negotiation.

Under Vietnam’s socio-economic development strategy in 2021-2030, the country will mobilize different resources, and develop rapidly and sustainably on the basis of science, technology, innovations and digital transformation. Vietnam strives to be a higher average-income country by 2030, and a developed country with high income by 2045.

Chinh said that the AI, semiconductor and automobile industry are important sectors for socio-economic development.

Vietnam has released the strategy on AI development, and developed national data centers that link the data centers of ministries, branches and localities.

In the automobile industry, Vietnam will focus on developing electric cars, using clean fuel with low carbon emissions, and investing in green transport.

In the semiconductor industry, Vietnam will be present in all the three stages of the semiconductor value chain, including designing, manufacturing and packaging.
